ASIs

Architect's Supplemental Instructions and how their revised drawings and specifications reach the conformed set.

Overview

An ASI — Architect's Supplemental Instruction — is the formal instrument by which the architect issues revised drawings and specification sections during construction. In LiveArch, issuing the ASI is also the act that carries those revisions into the conformed set.

View an issued ASI

Open Issued ASIs and select an instruction to see its number, title or short description, issue date, explanatory text or disclaimer, and the drawings and specification sections it included. Download the whole instruction or its individual contents, and verify the ASI number and issue date before relying on what you downloaded.
The ASI itself is permanent: its number, date, text, and full contents remain retrievable as the record of what was issued and when — independently of the conformed set it changed.

How an ASI advances the conformed set

The conformed set is the current version of every drawing and section record — Drawings describes the model in full. What makes ASIs distinctive is that during construction the ASI is normally the mechanism by which the current version advances: every file in an ASI attaches to a drawing or section record that already exists, as its next version.
Issuing the ASI is the act that moves the set forward. No records are created, and there is no second step to publish them.
  • Issuing is the publish step. The moment the ASI is issued, its drawings and sections become the current versions on their existing records — nobody has to update the set separately afterwards.
  • Nothing is overwritten. The versions the ASI supersedes stay on their records and stay downloadable, so what was current before the ASI remains answerable.
Note
A revised drawing attached only to an RFI does not advance the conformed set. That is the practical reason the ASI exists as its own instrument: it is the path that carries a revision into the set.

Create and issue an ASI

Users with the appropriate permission can:
  1. Open Create ASI
Enter the ASI number, title or short description, issue date, and required explanatory text.
  2. Add revised documents
Add each revised drawing and specification section.
  3. Verify attachments
Confirm that every file is attached to the correct existing record and has accurate revision metadata.
  4. Review and issue
Review the complete issuance before publishing it, then issue the ASI.
Note
Issuing updates the associated records in the conformed set — check it afterwards to confirm the expected versions are current. And a boundary worth naming: LiveArch supports the documentation workflow, but whether information should be issued through an ASI, an RFI response, a sketch, or another instrument is governed by the contract, the project communication plan, and CA leadership direction.
